Udit Narayan Jha, popularly known as Udit Narayan, stands among the most iconic playback singers in Indian cinema. Born on December 1, 1955, in the modest village of Baisi in Supaul district, Bihar, his journey to stardom is a remarkable example of passion and persistence.
He was raised in a Maithil Brahmin household, where his mother, Bhuvaneshwari Jha—a gifted folk singer, greatly influenced his early love for music. Udit began his education in Nepal, attending Shree Public Bindeshawari Secondary School in Rajbiraj. He later continued at Jageshwar High School in Kunauli, Bihar. Musical Journey
Udit Narayan began his career in Nepal, performing Maithili and Nepali folk songs on Radio Nepal in the early 1970s. His voice soon gained attention, earning him a scholarship from the Indian Embassy in Nepal to study classical music in Mumbai at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan. Under the mentorship of Pandit Dinkar Kaikini, he polished his vocal skills and prepared for a professional singing career.

Udit made his Bollywood debut with “Mil Gaya Mil Gaya” from the film Unees-Bees (1980). However, it was the 1988 blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak that marked his breakthrough. His rendition of “Papa Kehte Hain” alongside Alka Yagnik became a sensation, earning him his first Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer and establishing him as a leading voice in the industry.
